Our neighborhood of Newport Hills is considered to be in one of the safest places on the Eastside and for good reason: we pride ourselves in our sense of community. We know our neighbors, support and patronize our local businesses, and spend quality time in our community.
In an effort to promote and continue our sense of community, we offer these safety tips, resources, and on-going information about Public Safety. We live in Newport Hills on [address removed], a fairly heavily traveled (on foot and by car) street. Monday, Oct 5, between 9:15 am and 11:45 am our home was burglarized, sliding glass door smashed, valuables taken, etc. The police told us there was another break in that morning 8 blocks away. Our banker at Chase in Newcastle told me he lives on Lake Washington Blvd and was burglarized Sept. 3. Please warn our neighborhood to be on the watch for anyone suspicious. Alarm system did not deter our burglar. The police say the thief was on foot, carrying the stolen items in a backpack and that they were in and out in 5 minutes! Thanks. Michelle and Jack Whitney

On Saturday Oct 10 2009 my neighbor was at Newport Hills park at approx 5:30pm. She was with a friend and they were talking while their boys (8-10 years old) were playing football. When they looked up an adult male was playing with the boys. When the women approached the man bolted to his car. My friend went to speak with him and he began shouting expletives at her and drove off. She did file a police report.
